India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, and Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli have been absent from T20Is since the T20 World Cup 2022. The veteran duo has chosen to sit out of India’s white-ball series during the South Africa tour, only six months ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Ever since the ODI World Cup 2024 ended on a heartbreaking note for the Indian cricket team, there has been widespread speculation about whether the senior duo will participate in the world tournament scheduled for June, jointly hosted by the West Indies and the United States of America. Several cricketers and experts are giving their two cents on the future of these two cricketing superstars in the white-ball format.
Ashish Nehra Picks His Captain To Lead In T20 World Cup 2024
Meanwhile, former Indian pacer and cricket expert Ashish Nehra has backed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and has made a big prediction about them playing together in the upcoming World Cup 2024.
In a conversation on Jio Cinema, just before the 4th T20I match between India and Australia, Nehra remarked that Rohit and Kohli’s decision to skip the T20Is in South Africa should not be perceived as an indication that they will be absent from the T20 World Cup in 2024.
“Somebody like Rohit Sharma. Somebody like Virat Kohli. If they are fit, we do not need to discuss their form. Definitely, they will be there in the Caribbean and USA,” Nehra said while speaking on Jio Cinema.
Ashish Nehra has supported Rohit Sharma to captain Team India in the upcoming T20 World Cup, favoring him over Hardik Pandya. Speaking to JioCinema before the 4th T20 between India and Australia, Nehra emphasized that unless Rohit Sharma voluntarily decides to step down, no one has the authority to exclude him from the Indian side. Nehra highlighted that age is not a decisive factor; the crucial aspect is consistent performance, and Rohit Sharma has been delivering on that front. He said:
“Age is no criterion. What matters is how many runs you are scoring. Rohit Sharma is performing. So any selector will be tempted and they will have discussions unless he announces his retirement, which I hope won’t be the case in the near future. No one can remove Rohit Sharma from the team unless he decides on his own to walk away,”
