BCCI officials were unhappy with Manoj Tiwary over his tweet suggesting that the Ranji Trophy “should be scrapped off” from next season due to “so many things going wrong” in the premier red-ball domestic tournament in India.
The Ranji Trophy 2024 season was the last domestic tournament for Manoj Tiwary, the Bengal veteran who has announced his retirement from all forms of the game. He was given a guard of honor and was felicitated in Kolkata ahead of his last outing.
10 days ago, during his penultimate career game, Tiwary took to Twitter to express his strong views about the Ranji Trophy.
The 38-year-old former Bengal captain feels there are plenty of things not correct with the organizing of Ranji Trophy, such as poor umpiring, scheduling the games in the north and east India during winters, and unplanned scheduling of ‘A’ tours that bereft teams of their top players.
Manoj Tiwary had tweeted, “Ranji trophy should be scrapped off from the calendar from the next season onwards. So many things going wrong in the tournament. So many things need to looked into in order to save this prestigious tournament which has a rich history. It’s losing its charm and importance. Absolutely frustrated.”

Some IPL players don’t give Ranji Trophy enough importance: Manoj Tiwary
During his felicitation function in Kolkata, Manoj Tiwary also spoke on the BCCI’s directive to the players to make themselves available for the final round of the Ranji Trophy, failing to do so could lead to them being not considered for national selection.
Tiwary was quoted as saying, “In hindsight, I feel that the directive issued by the BCCI might not have been given had I not posted it on X. Perhaps my post prompted the BCCI secretary to put the players under pressure now. The seriousness they have shown by taking this step in the crucial stage of the Ranji Trophy indicates their concern that many players, especially high-profile ones who have succeeded in the IPL with limited first-class cricket, are not giving enough importance to the Ranji Trophy.”
“I can observe that young players have adopted an IPL-centric mindset,” he added.
