With Mahendra Singh Dhoni entering the twilight of his career in IPL, it is likely that he would probably not be playing a big role in the forthcoming IPL as a player. However, he will switch himself to the role of a mentor.
It was the exact same case scenario with Virat Kohli. As the captain realized that he will need his deputy to take over the reins once he enters into a phase that will mark the beginning of his end, he groomed Kohli into his perfect successor that will not hamper India’s progress in the cricketing roster.
In an interview, Dwayne Bravo revealed that Dhoni already has in mind things about grooming the next captain of Chennai.
Out of the 10 seasons that Mahi has led them, they have emerged as the champions in a record three times. As Dhoni slowly trudges into the end of his glittering IPL career, he has already started thinking about a transition in the team.
In an interview with ABP News, Bravo cited, “I know it’s been in the back of his mind for some time, I mean all of us have to step aside at some point in time. It’s just a matter of time when to step aside and hand it over to whether its Raina or someone younger”.
Raina will not be a part of this year’s IPL as the erstwhile Indian captain pulled out from the fray, citing personal reasons. It didn’t take long for others to react as Harbhajan Singh and Jason Roy quickly followed suit.
This may also be Dhoni’s swansong as he stepped down from international cricket a month ago and will be raring to go in IPL. The player would carry some extra responsibility on his shoulders as a batsman due to the absence of Suresh Raina who has proved to be the mainstay of CSK’s batting.
