BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has made a massive announcement that Rohit Sharma will lead India in the T20 World Cup 2024 in June in the West Indies and USA. Not only that, Shah also “promised” the fans that India “will win” the ICC tournament this year and end the drought that has extended for 11 years.

Under Rohit Sharma, India reached the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia and the final of the World Cup 2023 at home, but suffered heart-shattering losses. India’s last ICC silverware for the senior men’s team was won in 2013, when MS Dhoni led the side to the Champions Trophy title.

After the World Cup 2023 final loss, there were strong reports suggesting that the BCCI is looking at Hardik Pandya as the player to lead the side in the T20 World Cup 2024. But Pandya’s ankle injury, which he sustained during the World Cup and is not yet completely fit, thus missing the T20Is against Afghanistan, seemed to have worked against his case, even though he has been appointed as the new Mumbai Indians captain, replacing Rohit Sharma.

Confident that India will win T20 WC under captaincy of Rohit Sharma: Jay Shah

Jay Shah on Wednesday confirmed that the BCCI and selectors will continue with Rohit as their skipper and the 36-year-old will lead the country in the T20 World Cup.

The Hindu reported that Jay Shah said this at the function in Rajkot, on the eve of the third Test against England,

Apart from confirming Rohit Sharma as the skipper, Jay Shah also confidently said that India will win the T20 World Cup!

As quoted by The Hindu, at the unveiling of Niranjan Shah Stadium, Jay Shah said, “We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts there by winning 10 matches in a row. I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados”
