Rahul Dravid has reportedly decided to not extend his contract with the BCCI as the Indian men’s cricket team head coach and is set to return to the IPL in a coaching role for one of the ten franchises
While less than one month away from the IPL auction, any franchise is unlikely to sack their head coach, but Rahul Dravid can be roped in the form of either a batting coach, mentor, or Director of Cricket.
Dravid’s head coach contract with the BCCI expired after the World Cup 2023. It has been learned that the 50-year-old has decided not to extend his contract and instead spend more time with his family. But, Rahul Dravid is keen to be involved in the IPL in a coaching staff capacity.
A report in Times Of India suggested Rahul Dravid is already in contact with a franchise and talking about a two-year deal.
“He’s in talks with an IPL team for a big two-year contract,” a source said.
Rahul Dravid could take back the NCA role as VVS Laxman is touted to be next India coach
The reason learned for Dravid not keen on extending his contract with the BCCI as India’s head coach is he doesn’t want to travel a lot now, and wishes to spend more time with his family with his children growing up. Rahul Dravid is also open to taking his previous role as the NCA head, since it’s located in Bangalore where hsi family lives.
“Dravid has communicated to the BCCI that he isn’t keen to continue as a full-time coach. For close to 20 years, he has traveled with the Indian team as a player, and for the past couple of years, he again went through the same grind, which he doesn’t want to undergo. He’s fine with a role at the NCA as the head there (a role he previously served in), which will allow him to stay back in his hometown Bengaluru. Like earlier, he’s fine with coaching the team sporadically, but not again as a full-time coach,” the source said.
This is a likely possibility as VVS Laxman, the current head at the NCA, is reported to become the next India head coach, making the NCA head position vacant.
