Cheteshwar Pujara Sends A Subtle Hint To The Selectors That He Is Ready

South Africa scored a formidable 408 runs in the first innings of the first test against India in Centurion. The hero of the day was none other than the seasoned campaigner, Dean Elgar, who played a marathon innings. Facing a challenging track that favored seamers, Elgar’s knock of 185 runs off 287 balls was nothing short of extraordinary.

Playing in his final game at his home ground in Centurion, Elgar showcased unparalleled grit and skill. His innings comprised a staggering 28 fours, a testament to his dominance even on a pitch that provided considerable assistance to the seam bowlers. Elgar’s sensational performance not only put South Africa in the driver’s seat but also left a lasting mark on the cricketing world.

Despite Virat Kohli’s valiant effort with a score of 76 runs, India managed to post only 131 runs in the second innings. The result? A resounding defeat for India, with South Africa securing victory by an innings and 32 runs. The speed at which the match concluded, merely in three days, caught everyone off guard, especially considering the pre-match speculations about India potentially challenging their limits.

Contrary to expectations, South Africa’s relatively inexperienced squad outperformed and outmanoeuvred India in every aspect of the game. The rookies displayed remarkable maturity and discipline, dealing a blow to the world’s best Test squad. This unexpected victory not only solidifies South Africa’s standing but also keeps India’s hopes alive, showcasing the unpredictable nature of cricket.

The first session of the test witnessed India grappling with a heavy loss of wickets, primarily due to the seam movement orchestrated by Rabada and debutant Nandre Burger. Despite KL Rahul’s brilliant century, guiding India to a total of 245 runs in their first innings, the team found themselves on shaky ground.

South Africa responded strategically by blunting the new ball with de Zorzi and Elgar, setting the stage for a formidable reply. Elgar, in particular, crafted his maiden century at Centurion, followed by a “daddy hundred.” The hosts capitalized on Shardul’s and Prasidh’s lackluster bowling, securing a commanding lead with Jansen achieving his highest-ever Test score and Bedingham reaching a half-century.

With a substantial 163-run advantage, India’s chances of a comeback were diminishing, and Rabada ensured they would never recover. His exceptional bowling performance further solidified South Africa’s grip on the match, leaving India in a precarious position.

In the aftermath of the World Test Championship final 2023 defeat, India has taken significant steps towards building a test team for the future. Notably, stalwarts Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been sidelined due to their age and recent poor performances. This decision reflects India’s commitment to rejuvenating the team and fostering emerging talent.

While some fans expressed discontent over Pujara’s exclusion, the seasoned batsman has embarked on a new chapter. Pujara’s dedication is evident as he diligently prepares for the upcoming domestic Ranji Trophy season. A recent social media post featuring a video of him practising in the nets is raising eyebrows, with some interpreting it as a subtle message to the selectors.
