MS Dhoni, who has led the Chennai Super Kings to victory four times, could be playing in his last IPL this season. Dhoni has captained CSK since the first season of the Indian Premier League. Confirming the news, Chennai Super Kings released an official statement regarding the same. The statement read:

“MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team. Jadeja, who has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will only be the third player to lead CSK. Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond.”

Meanwhile, moments after Dhoni’s bombshell announcement of stepping down as captain of CSK’s CEO Kasi Viswanathan addressed MS Dhoni’s future on whether he will play for CSK next year or not, after giving up captaincy.

Kasi Viswanathan revealed that MSD was thinking about the same for a long time. He also revealed that Dhoni announced his decision on Thursday at the team meeting before the squad left for training. He said:

“No, I don’t think (this is going to be his last season). He will carry on,” Viswanathan told The Indian Express. “We have always respected the decision of MS. He has been a pillar of strength for us. He will continue to be a pillar of strength and he will guide Jaddu (Jadeja) and the other members of the team. He is expecting a smooth transition from him to Jaddu and that’s why he has taken the decision. As a captain and player, who has always cared for CSK, he must have taken the decision in the best interest of CSK.”

Meanwhile, CSK will open their IPL 2022 campaign against two-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening clash on March 27th at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
