Deepak Chahar expressed his challenge in taking cues from both MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad during IPL 2024. He mentioned feeling a bit confused when it comes to fielding placements and other strategic decisions, considering Ruturaj Gaikwad’s new role as the captain of CSK in IPL 2024.
MS Dhoni passed on the captaincy reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad before the IPL 2024 tournament commenced. However, determining the actual skipper on the field has proven challenging. Despite Gaikwad’s captaincy title, Dhoni has been observed guiding players and orchestrating fielding placements during CSK’s initial matches against RCB and GT.
Deepak Chahar Made A Bombshell Remark On Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Captaincy

Interestingly, the cameras frequently focused on Dhoni rather than Gaikwad during these games. Consequently, commentators like Virender Sehwag and Suresh Raina humorously remarked on the CSK captaincy dynamics, noting Dhoni’s proactive role while Gaikwad appeared to take a more subdued position.
“Bhai Ruturaj ka bhi chahraa dekha do ek do baar(in camera) vo bhi captain hai sirf Dhoni ka hi Chahraa dekha raha hai (Brother, Please show Rituraj’s face as well (in camera), he is captain. The cameraman is showing only Dhoni’s face),” Sehwag had said.
After the game, in a conversation with IPL 2024 commentator and legendary player Sunil Gavaskar on Star Sports, Deepak Chahar admitted to feeling a bit confused about following both MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad on the field. Deepak mentioned that he often looks to both of them for field placements and other instructions. He revealed:
“I have to look at Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) and at Ruturaj (Gaikwad) – both of them these days for field placements and all. So there is a bit of a confusion where to look now but Ruturaj is doing well and he is leading the way,”
In the CSK vs GT match on Tuesday, Deepak Chahar delivered a solid performance, taking 2 wickets in his 4 overs with an economy rate of 7.0. In the previous game against RCB, he managed to grab 1 wicket.
Chennai Super Kings will now take on Delhi Capitals on Sunday (March 31).
