Shubman Gill’s recent struggles in Test cricket raise doubts about his future in the format. The challenges began during the series against South Africa leading up to the current England series, where Gill managed just 74 runs at an average of 18.50.
Assessing Gill’s overall Test record, he has accumulated 1040 runs in 20 matches with an average of 30.59 and a strike rate approaching 60. However, his recent performances have been subpar, with scores of 2, 26, 36, and 10 in his last four innings before the ongoing England series.

Dinesh Karthik Slammed Shubman Gill

Despite expressing comfort batting at number three, Gill could only muster 23 runs off 66 balls in his first innings of 2024. Despite being unbeaten on 14 when play resumed on day 2, he added only 10 more runs to his overnight score.
Talking about Shubman’s recent form, DK said: “You can see pressure has gone to Shubman Gill. He knows if he fails a couple of times, his career, for the moment, could be on the line. So, you could see that reluctance”
Shubman Gill, apart from his notable 128-run innings against Australia in Ahmedabad, has struggled in Test cricket since the beginning of 2023, managing just 199 runs at an average of 17.60. Kevin Pietersen highlighted Gill’s difficulty in scoring, mentioning that he blocked too many deliveries before attempting release shots.
During his innings on day two, Gill skied one early, but the England fielders failed to take the catch. He was eventually dismissed by debutant Tom Hartley, chipping one straight to Ben Duckett, positioned strategically inside the circle on the leg side.
Despite a successful year in ODI cricket in 2023, Gill faced challenges in the Test format, scoring only 258 runs in six matches at an average of 28.67 and a strike rate of 62.77.
