India captain Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli, returned to the T20I team after a gap of more than 13 months in the Afghanistan series at home.
While Kohli, who missed the first T20I in Mohali for personal reasons, smashed 29 runs in 16 balls in the second T20I in Indore, Rohit failed to make a mark in both outings, bagging ducks in both games. In the first T20I, he and his batting partner, Shubman Gill, got into a mix-up, leading to Sharma’s run-out. In the second T20I, Rohit tried to hit Fazalhaq Farooqi on the legside but completely missed the ball and was bowled.
Before his return, there had been questions among the fans as to whether Rohit Sharma was good enough to even be in India’s T20I XI, let alone lead the side.
Now with two consecutive ducks, the questions and pressure are only increasing because the upcoming third T20I against Afghanistan is the last T20I for India before the T20 World Cup 2024 in June in the West Indies and the USA, though Rohit will have the first half of the IPL 2024 season to convince the selectors that he can carry his form from the World Cup 2023 to the shortest format.
Rohit didn’t play a single T20I in 2023 because the other two formats were given precedence.
Rohit Sharma has poor stats in his last 10 T20I innings
In his last 10 T20I innings, Rohit Sharma has scored only 159 runs at a dismal strike rate of 109. He has gotten out for ducks three times, and his only half-century in this period came against the Netherlands.
He had a disaster of a time in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, managing scores of 4 against Pakistan, 15 against South Africa, 2 against Bangladesh, 15 against Zimbabwe, and 27 (28 balls) against England in the semi-final.
Players are judged on consistent performances and not on the basis of one mad knock. If that’s the metric, then you can make a case for even Karun Nair to be a better Test batter than Sachin because Karun Nair scored a triple and Sachin didn’t. But that’s not how it works.
