At the ICC World Cup 2023, the defending champions, England, were stunned by an unexpected challenge. They’ve played in four games, losing three of them in devastating fashion. England was recently beaten soundly by South Africa at Mumbai’s legendary Wankhede Stadium. This defeat represents a major setback for England in the history of the ODI World Cup. Joe Root, a key player for England, says that the increasingly deteriorating air quality in India, especially in Mumbai, is largely to blame for the team’s poor showing.

The air quality in Mumbai, a city known for its busy streets, diverse culture, and cricket-obsessed inhabitants, has significantly worsened in recent years. This alarming drop has resulted in several reports of individuals having difficulty breathing. When compared to other major cities with similar reputations for high pollution levels, Mumbai’s air quality actually ranks higher. Players’ on-field performance has suffered as a result of their increased anxiety caused by these circumstances.

Joe Root, England’s premier batter, shed light on the team’s dismal predicament after a disappointing defeat. He said: ”I’ve obviously played in hotter conditions and more humid conditions but not anything like this before. It just felt like you couldn’t get your breath. It felt like eating the air. It was unique. Klaasen was struggling. Adil Rashid for gasping for air while he was walking back to his run-up. I do not know if it was poor air quality, but it felt like quite a hazy day.”

The seriousness of the crisis may be seen by contrasting the air quality in Mumbai with that of London. The AQI for Mumbai that day reached a catastrophic 500, 10 times higher than the AQI for London. This striking difference highlights the seriousness of the problem with air quality that the English cricket team faced during their game versus South Africa. It’s clear that England’s performance suffered due to the smog in Mumbai. Accuracy, focus, and quickness are essential in cricket, and the players’ physical fitness is of utmost importance. The smog in Mumbai made it difficult for the athletes to perform at their typical level of excellence.
