Former Indian cricketer and World Cup hero Gautam Gambhir showered praises on the Indian hockey team as they ended their 41-year-long wait for an Olympic medal in men’s hockey. Yes, on Thursday, the Indian hockey team won the bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics by defeating Germany 5-4 at the Oi Hockey Stadium — North Pitch.
Manpreet Singh led the team to put on a stellar show in Tokyo to bring Hockey back to the spotlight. This win kickstarted the process of reviving the lost glory of Indian hockey.
The Men in Blue gave a gutsy performance in the Bronze Medal match, leaving behind the disappointment of having lost the Olympic semi-final to Belgium. There were moments when the Indian hockey team looked down and out as they were trailing 1-3, however, post-half-time, the Indian team bounced back into the game to make it 5-3 at the start of the 3rd quarter.
Meanwhile, as soon as the hockey team won the high-voltage match, congratulatory messages poured in for the India men’s hockey team from all the corners. From celebrities, cricketers to fans around the country, everyone took to their Twitter to hail the brilliance of our Indian hockey team.
Among many, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir also joined the bandwagon and paid the ultimate tribute to the men’s hockey team. Gautam Gambhir, who played a crucial role in the World Cup victories of 2007 and 2011, took to his Twitter and hailed the bronze win of the Indian hockey team bigger than any of the Cricket World Cup won by the Indian cricket team in the past. He wrote:
“Forget 1983, 2007 or 2011, this medal in Hockey is bigger than any World Cup! #IndianHockeyMyPride ??”

However, the twitterati started ‘an unnecessary debate’ on social media as there were many who started trolling the former cricketer over the tweet. There were many who asked him to not demean other’s achievements while highlighting another.
Here, check out the reactions of Twitterati on this:
Sir, this looks more like a politician’s tweet than a sportsperson’s tweet. No need to demean other’s achievement.

Everyone is aware of the fact that Gautam Gambhir played a crucial role in the World Cup 2011 victory. His knock of 97 runs helped team India to win the iconic game. With his tweet, Gambhir was only highlighting the fact that winning an Olympic medal for India is a bigger glory. Also, India ended their 41-year-long wait for an Olympic medal, which makes this win even more special.
