In only his second game after returning from a 5-month injury-forced layoff, Mumbai’s Prithvi Shaw hammered a blistering century against Chhattisgarh in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024 season.

Prithvi Shaw had been recovering from a knee injury that he sustained in August last year during his County stint with Northants. His last two County scores were 244 and 125*.

He made his Ranji Trophy return this month, scoring 35 runs against Bengal at Eden Gardens. Against Chhattisgarh in Raipur this week, Prithvi Shaw blasted 159 runs in 185 balls. The diminutive right-handed opener walloped 18 fours and 3 sixes in his entertaining innings at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur which helped Mumbai go past 300 on Day 1 of the match.

Even before his injury last year, he had displayed prolific form. He ransacked 595 runs in 10 innings in the last Ranji Trophy season, which included a mammoth knock of 379 runs off 383 balls against Assam – the second-highest Ranji Trophy score of all time.

Despite this, Prithvi Shaw has not been recalled to the Test setup while Yashasvi Jaiswal got the nod and the young left-hander made his Test debut as an opener while Shubman Gill was pushed to number 3. The fans of Prithvi Shaw have been irked particularly by the selectors and management showing excess faith in Gill. Gill recently notched up an impressive century in Vizag against England, but that came after a lean run where he averaged only 25 since 2023 until before his century in Vizag.

Last year, Shaw also created a record in England’s domestic one-day competition when he registered a score of 244 in 153 balls against Somerset.

Shaw’s last Test came on the 2020/21 tour of Australia where his technical flaw against the incoming deliveries saw him being dropped. It is observed that he has worked and rectified those shortcomings and is set to finally have the career that was expected of him.

Fans of Prithvi Shaw slam BCCI for ignoring him from Test cricket:
