Kane Williamson will take over the captaincy of Sunrisers Hyderabad from David Warner for the rest of the IPL 2021. Williamson’s promotion came a day after Warner said that he took ‘full responsibility for the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s loss against CSK, which was their 5th defeat in 6 games.
“I take full responsibility. The way that I batted was obviously very slow,” Warner told host broadcaster Star Sports after the Sunrisers lost to the Super Kings by seven wickets. “I was hitting a lot of fielders and [was] very, very frustrated… Look I take full responsibility from a batting point of view. I felt [that with] Manish coming back into the team, the way that he batted was exceptional. And obviously Kane [Williamson] and Kedar [Jadhav] towards the back end there, they put some boundaries away and got us to a respectable total. I felt that we were probably just below par from where we were. But yeah look, at the end of the day, I’ll take full responsibility.”
Kane Williamson will take over from David Warner after a poor start to the season as the team is currently at the bottom of the standings with a solitary win from six games. Sunrisers Hyderabad released a statement that read:
“The decision has not come lightly as the management respects the enormous impact David Warner has had for the franchise over a number of years,”
He added:
“As we face the remainder of the season, we are sure David will continue to help us strive for success both on and off the field.”
“The team management has also made the decision that they will be changing their overseas combination for tomorrow’s (Sunday) match against Rajasthan Royals.”
Talking about Williamson, he has previously led Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2018 and 2019 editions of the Indian Premier League, when David Warner was banned from participating in the tournament in the aftermath of the Sandpapergate controversy in Cape Town.
Williamson turned out to be the top scorer in the league with 735 runs in 2018. In 2019, SRH bowed out at the Eliminator stage after finishing 4th in the standings. Overall, Williamson’s captaincy record in the IPL reads 14 wins and 12 losses in 26 matches.
Meanwhile, as soon as Williamson was named as the new skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad, social media was flooded with mixed reactions from Twitterati on this. While many were disappointed with the decision, on the other hand, many were thrilled with the decision of Williamson taking the responsibility of the skipper.

Warner dropped from captaincy. What a disrespect! SRH should learn from RCB and stick with their captain no matter what. ?

Respect for RCB owners for not removing Kohli from captaincy even after 8+ years of disaster class smh

David Warner changed #SRH with his aggressive batting and captaincy including winning IPL 2016 – in few season, he was just one man army in batting unit. One of the greats in the league end his captaincy in the team.
