Against Bangladesh, young India opener Shubman Gill recorded his 5th ODI century. However, it was his first ODI century that ended up in a losing cause as Shakib Al Hasan’s side prevailed by only 6 runs in Colombo to end the Super 4 round in the Asia Cup 2023 with a victory.

This win for Bangladesh meant that they avoided the bottom position in the Super 4 round, which went to Pakistan. India and Sri Lanka finished first and second respectively in the Super 4 round and will next meet in the Asia Cup 2023 final on Sunday in Colombo.

Talking about the match, Bangladesh rode on Shakib’s 80 and Towhid Hridoy’s 54, but it was the late efforts from the tailenders – Nasum Ahmed scored 44 runs, Mahedi Hasan scored 29 runs, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib scored 14 runs – that propelled Bangladesh to a par total of 265 runs.

In reply, India lost two early wickets – Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma – to debutant pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib. The wickets procession continued as India lost wickets regularly while Shubman Gill held his own end and proceeded to make a terrific, gritty century. He got out for 121 runs in 133 balls. Axar Patel kept India’s hopes alive with his 42-run knock in 34 balls. However, he got out when India needed 12 more runs and India lost the match eventually.

This was Bangladesh’s first victory over India in the Asia Cup in 11 years, their previous one coming in 2012 when Sachin Tendulkar hit his 100th century, but it also went in vain, as did Shubman Gill’s ton in Colombo.

This parallel between Sachin Tendulkar and Shubman Gill – their centuries ending in a losing cause vs Bangladesh in Asia Cup – led to a flurry of memes on Twitter as Gill is rumored to be dating Tendulkar’s daughter Sara.

Here are some son-in-law, father-in-law memes on Shubman Gill and Sachin Tendulkar:
