Pakistan captain Babar Azam was trolled heavily on social media on Thursday after Shubman Gill hit a cracking half-century against Bangladesh and this would decrease the difference between the two batters in the ICC ODI Batsman ratings.
It’s been a year since Babar Azam rose to the top of the ICC ODI Batsman ranking, and he’s held that position. However, now it seems that Shubman Gill is soon going to surpass him.
Currently, the difference between the rating points of Babar and Gill is only 18 points – 836 rating points for Babar and 818 for Gill. This was after Babar’s half-century against India and Gill scoring only 16 runs against Pakistan.
However, now with this breezy half-century from Shubman Gill against Bangladesh in Pune, this gap between the two is going to decrease, and it would shorten further if Babar Azam fails against Australia on Friday in Bangalore.
Fans came up with hilarious memes trolling Babar Azam after Shubman Gill hit fifty vs Bangladesh:
Shubman Gill scored 53 runs in 55 balls against Bangladesh in Pune, as India breezed on their way to the target of 257 runs. The youngster cracked 5 classy fours and two thumping sixes.
On a good batting pitch, Bangladesh, after electing to bat first, scored 256 runs with opener Litton Das top-scoring with 66 runs. Even as India restricted Bangladesh to a below-par total, the hosts wouldn’t be too pleased with their efforts in the death overs as Mahmudullah cracked 46 runs in 36 balls.
India captain Rohit Sharma once again started off as a bullet train, crashing two fours in the first over and kept pressing the accelerator. Rohit hit 7 fours and 2 sixes in his knock of 48 runs in 40 balls. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli then recorded brisk half-centuries and the latter went on to convert it into a century – his 48th in ODIs – as India won their 4th consecutive game.
Kohli said: “I wanted to make a big contribution. I have had a few fifties in World Cups, haven’t really converted. I just wanted to finish off the game this time around and hang around till the end which is what I have done over the years. I was telling Shubman, even if you dream about a situation like that, you’ll just go back to sleep, you won’t think it’s real.”
