While her IPL franchise, Sunriers Hyderabad, has been disappointing in recent years, Kavya Maran has had plenty to celebrate with her SA20 franchise, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, as Aiden Markram’s side won a second consecutive SA20 trophy in as many seasons of the competition that began last year.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape defeated Keshav Maharaj’s Durban in Cape Town by a huge margin of 89 runs in the SA20 2024 final on Saturday at Newlands in Cape Town to pocket their second SA20 title.
Four of the top five batters scored between 40 and 60, and all at a strike rate of more than 160 helping SEC post 204. In reply, Durban failed to get going. And their challenge was virtually ended when they lost Quinton de Kock for 3 runs and Heinrich Klaasen for a duck. Marco Jansen took a terrific five-wicket haul while Baartman and Worrall took two wickets each, bowling Durban out for only 115.
Sunriers franchise owner Kavya Maran was present at the venue to cheer for her team and was jubilant after SEC clinched their second consecutive SA20 title. Maran also joined in the celebrations with Aiden Markram and the rest of the Sunrisers squad.
Fans congratulated Kavya Maran for Sunrisers Eastern Cape winning the SA20 2024 title:
After the victory, Kavya Maran spoke with the broadcasters and expressed her emotions, hailing Markram’s team’s efforts in being the best team in the tournament.
Kavya said, “It’s a second cup. Back-to-back, two in a row. So glad, so happy. Best performance by the team with the bat and the ball. They have been dominating this whole season, and to finally get this through-I mean, it’s unbelievable to be winning it (title) back-to-back. So happy for the guys; everyone put up a great show. Very strong team that we played today, but happy to have the win at the end of the day.”
Batter Tom Abell, who smashed 55 runs in 34 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes, after Sunrisers had lost opener Dawid Malan very early, was named the Man of the Match in the final.
