Tilak Varma recently got his maiden ODI call-up for the Asia Cup 2023. Getting his first crack at the ODI just less than two months away from the World Cup 2023 revealed the faith and confidence the selectors and the management have in Tilak Varma’s abilities and his temperament.
When Tilak Varma was just 19 years old, after playing his debut IPL season for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022, captain Rohit Sharma had predicted that the left-hander will soon play all three formats for India and will be a big name in Indian cricket owing to his class, technique, and temperament.
Tilak Varma’s coolness and composure at the crease, plus his solid technique, has made everyone sit up and take notice of the youngster.
Born in Hyderabad, Tilak Varma made his Ranji Trophy debut and Syed Mushtaq Ali debut for Hyderabad in early 2019. He was one of India’s rising star in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup, and the Mumbai Indians had been tracking him since then.
MI then went and bid for Varma in the 2022 IPL auction, where they bagged the 19-year-old for INR 1.7 crore up from his base price of INR 20 lakh. That INR 1.7 crore price tag now seems a steal that the Mumbai Indians made as Tilak Varma cemented his place in MI’s side and this year made his T20I debut soon after another bumper season in IPL 2023.
In his debut season itself, Varma was carrying the Mumbai Indians batting line-up as the top-order failed continuously. In IPL 2022, the stylish left-hander scored 397 runs at an average of 36 and strike rate of 131.
He had an even bigger IPL 2023 season: though he scored a few fewer runs than the previous season – he scored 343 runs while missing 3 matches due to injury and his batting position going down as MI put Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav ahead of him – Varma smashed his runs at a strike rate of 164, which made jaws dropped all around.
This led to a T20I call-up: he finished as India’s top-scorer in the series in West Indies, scoring 173 runs in 5 matches at an average of 57.
