India’s middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer has been receiving praises from all corners for his stellar performance in his debut match for the Indian cricket team in the ongoing match against New Zealand in Kanpur. Shreyas became the 16th Indian batter to smash his maiden century on the Test debut when he brought up his first century off 157 deliveries in the first session of Day 2 at the Green Park Stadium.
Shreyas Iyer has impressed one and all with his determination and hard work, however, it wasn’t easy for him. The last few months were terribly hard for Iyer, after having missed the majority of the 2021 edition due to a shoulder injury, with Rishabh Pant leading the team in his absence.
However, he made a solid return to his side in the UAE leg of the tournament and is now all set to make a fantastic debut for India in the longest formats of the game. He was also named in India’s T20 World Cup but was drafted back into the 3-match T20I series against New Zealand.
Coming into the Kanpur Test, it was a ‘do-or-die’ situation for the young talent as he replaced Virat Kohli in the playing XI, who will be back in the Mumbai Test. He finished day 1 remaining unbeaten on 75 and on Friday, he carried on with his brilliance with the bat. It didn’t take him long to add 25 runs to complete his maiden century on day 2.
Social media has been flooded with amazing tweets from netizens. From cricketers, experts to fans, everyone came up with amazing tweets to laud the performance of the Iyer.
Among many, ESPN Cricinfo’s editor, Gaurav Kalra also penned down a heartfelt tweet for Shreyas. In his Tweet, Gaurav quoted Shreyas’ tweet from April this year, when he had undergone shoulder surgery, and hailed him for his brave comeback into the game. He wrote:
“This was in April, just after shoulder surgery. and here he is, just a few months later with a hundred on test debut! #INDvNZ”
