An unfortunate incident happened at the IPL 2022 mega-auction when Hugh Edmeades, the IPL auctioneer, collapsed midway during the early hours of the auction on Saturday in Bangalore. Soon Charu Sharma, a well-known commentator who lives in Bangalore, was called up by the BCCI to fulfil the duties.
The IPL confirmed that Hugh Edmeades suffered “Postural Hypotension” amid auctioning Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga. He fell down from the podium and was unconscious.
The medical team attended him in a jiffy and thankfully he was then observed to be stable. The auction process was paused immediately and an early lunch was taken.

Charu Sharma was called upon by the board officials to resume the proceedings. He arrived and with his immense grace thanked Edmeades for his work so far, with all the franchises in the auction room applauding with claps for the suffered auctioneer, and informed that his health is stable and is undertaking treatment.
Sharma, a well-renowned sports commentator and host among many of his jobs and someone who has been hosting events for two decades, seamlessly took over the role of the auctioneer. He was brilliant in his speech and was clear about when to hit the hammer for selling a player.
“Charu doing a stellar job for someone who was called in at a moment’s notice,” Gaurav Kapur tweeted.

Meanwhile, talking about the IPL mega-auction, Ishan Kishan has been the most expensive pick so far. Mumbai Indians broke the bank to re-sign Kishan for a huge amount of 15.25 crore. Kishan was released ahead of the mega-auction by MI, but now has been rebought by the Rohit Sharma-led franchise.
Shreyas Iyer, who asked to be released from Delhi Capitals after Rishabh Pant was finalized as the captain, was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping 12.25 crore. Although KKR have also secured Pat Cummins, the Australian Test skipper, Iyer is likely to be appointed as KKR’s new captain.
Also, Deepak Chahar was re-bought by CSK – for a whopping 14 crore.
