Finally, the much-awaited wait of Sanju Samson and his huge mass of fans got over as the Kerala and Rajasthan Royals skipper notched up a maiden international century.
In the series-deciding 3rd ODI between India and South Africa on Thursday in Paarl, Sanju Samson cracked a brilliant hundred, which helped India post an above-par total of 296, which proved 78 runs more than what the Proteas could manage. This ton from Samson propelled India to their only second ODI series win in South Africa, adding to the 5-1 victory in 2018, and in between is sandwiched a 0-3 whitewash in 2022.
As Sanju Samson raised his first ODI century, a video from Gautam Gambhir, the former India batsman and 2011 World Cup winner, went viral on social media wherein Gambhir heaped praise on Samson and predicted that he has all the abilities and talent to become the number 1 batter in the world someday.
This video is from the IPL 2020 after Sanju Samson’s whirlwind knock of 74 runs in 32 balls against CSK. With MS Dhoni standing behind, Samson displayed his jaw-dropping six-hitting ability to smoke 9 sixes in that innings.
Gautam Gambhir lavished rich praises on the Rajasthan Royals star, saying that it was India’s loss Samson was not part of India’s XI then.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul, the interim skipper of the ODI series against South Africa, even went on to hint that Sanju Samson could be the next number 3 in India’s ODI side after Virat Kohli, who is 35 years of age now.
“Pleased for Sanju, he’s been a phenomenal performer in the IPL over the years. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to give him the chance at No. 3, because obviously there are stalwarts in the ODIs who occupy those key spots. Glad he was able to grab his chances here,” KL Rahul said after the game in the post-match presentation ceremony. He added “There are world-class players [in the Indian side]. Given this opportunity, he capitalised.”
