“Hardik Pandya Has Replaced Rohit Sharma As India’s T20I Captain”

Last updated:

Earlier in this month, after India defeated West Indies 4-1, all-rounder Hardik Pandya had said that he would “I get an opportunity in the future, I’ll be more than happy to” lead India full-time after Rohit Sharma.

However, for some that moment to see Hardik Pandya being named the captain replacing Rohit Sharma came sooner than expected when a Twitter account with BCCI’s logo and BCCI name claimed that the all-rounder has been appointed as the new T20I skipper of Team India.

On Wednesday, this created a big rumble on social media when a this Twitter account tweeted: “Rohit Sharma has resigned from Captaincy of Team India 🇮🇳 in the t20i format. This decision has been taken in the best interest of Indian Cricket going forward. He will continue to lead the side in ODI’s & Tests.”

It added: “Mr. Hardik Pandya is the new Indian Captain for t20i!”

But, there was no news as such on google; only on Twitter, this news went viral. And many fans were concerned about the sudden change in captaincy and stepping down by Rohit, as this tweet claimed. This tweet went so viral that it received over 11,000 likes and a huge number of retweets and comments with many believing this news to be true.

Is Hardik Pandya the new T20I captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma?

Well – NO. Rohit Sharma continues to be India’s T20I captain and will be at least until this year’s T20 World Cup, in October-November in Australia.

About this viral tweet, then it is from a user pretending to be the BCCI, as it says in its bio that this is a parody account of the board. You can see that the Twitter handle of this account is “_BCCII” and it only has 1700 followers while the BCCI’s account is verified and has over 18 million followers.

India have not lost a series since Rohit took over full-time T20I captaincy

Since Rohit Sharma took over full-time T20I captaincy – which is after last year’s group stage exit at the T20 World Cup under Virat Kohli – India have thrashed New Zealand, West Indies (twice), Sri Lanka and England in his captaincy in T20I series; Hardik Pandya led India in Ireland where India won 2-0 and also in the fifth T20I against West Indies which also India won.

Hardik, who led Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2022 crown, was asked whether he will welcome the opportunity to lead India full-time if presented with.

“Yeah! why not?” Hardik said. “If I get an opportunity in the future, I’ll be more than happy to do that, but right now we have the World Cup, and we have the Asia Cup [coming up].”

“We’re going to focus on that[Asia Cup] and make sure as a team what we’re doing, and make sure that all the skillsets, which we are learning we can keep getting better at it, and at the same point of time enjoy the game as well.”
