The already richest cricket board in the world is set to become even richer – and by a value of no less than a whopping $1 billion – as the BCCI has released invitations for the broadcast and media right for the 2023-28 home season which will see a total of 88 matches being played in India.
Starting from September 2023 with the 3-ODI series against Australia, India will host 7 different teams in this five-year cycle for 88 games in all. Out of these 88 matches, 39 matches, that is 45 percent, of matches will be played against only two teams – vs England (10 Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is), and vs Australia (five Tests, six ODIs, and 10 T20Is).
and 18 matches “A significant portion of the games against Australia and England is a positive aspect, and their distribution throughout the cycle is well-managed,” a broadcaster told Cricbuzz.
BCCI set to receive bidding upto $1 billion from broadcasters for home matches
It has been learned that the BCCI is expecting the bidding war between broadcasters to fetch them at least $1 billion, i.e. INR 8,200 crore, for the sale of the TV and digital rights for the 2023-28 home matches, comprising 25 Tests, 27 ODIs, and 36 T20Is.
For the 2018-23 cycle, the BCCI earned $944 million (approx INR 6,138 crore) from Star India- the per match value for the 2018-23 cycle was INR 60 crore for digital and TV. This time the board will be hosting separate bids for digital and TV rights which is set to make them a billion dollars richer.
And we have not even counted the IPL money that they earned last time around for the new cycle. The BCCI received bidding of INR 48,390 crore from media rights during the IPL 2023, evaluating to over 100 INR per match for combined digital and TV rights – the digital rights bought by Reliance and TV rights by Star TV.
Disney-Hotstar and Reliance-Viacom, the two broadcasters who delivered the IPL 2023 to the fans, are once again strong contenders to bag the home season 2023-28 rights for India matches.
