It is none other than MS Dhoni who is the most successful captain in Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The series is named after distinguished former captains, Australia’s Allan Border and India’s Sunil Gavaskar. This name for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between the India and Australia was given in 1996.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is Test series played between India and Australia. The winner of the series takes the trophy, and if the series ends in a draw, the holder of the trophy going into the series will retain it.

Currently, ahead of the upcoming 2023 India-Australia Test series in India, it is India who is the holders of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, having won the last three Test series between the two teams – in 2017 in India, followed by two historic series triumphs in Australia in 2018/19 and 2020/21.

The last time Australia won a Test series in India was in the 2004/05 series.

After that, Australia played 4 Test series in India and lost all 4 of them, winning only one Test – in 2017 in Pune – out of 14 Tests.

Who is the most successful captain in Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia?

Under MS Dhoni, India defeated Australia in 8 Tests and lost 4 while one was drawn. Under MS Dhoni, India defeated Australia in three home series: 2-0 in 2008, 2-0 in 2010, and 4-0 in 2013. Also, under Dhoni, India was whitewashed 4-0 in the 2011/ series in Australia.

On the 2014 tour of Australia, India lost one and drew one Test under Dhoni’s captaincy. On that same tour, Dhoni retired from Test cricket.

Following MS Dhoni are Steve Waugh and Michael Clarke, both with 5 Test match wins in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy over India in 10 Tests and 3 defeats.

Virat Kohli, who transformed the Indian Test team, has three Test matches wins over Australia as skipper and 4 losses and 3 draws. Kohli became the first Asian skipper to win a Test series in Australia, in 2018/19.
