Former England captain Kevin Pietersen says that England have been given a “major blow” with the absence of Harry Brook for the upcoming 5-match Test series in India, starting January 25.
England batsman Harry Brook has withdrawn from the Test series in India and will return to his home. The ECB on Sunday stated that Brook will “return home with immediate effect for personal reasons”.
Initially, the ECB had stated that he would not fly to India to participate in any of the games. However, soon after, the ECB changed its statement and deleted that part. It has been learned that Harry Brook could participate in the series later on, but for now, he is considered unavailable for the entire series.
The ECB said in its statement, “The Brook family respectfully requests privacy during this time. In light of this, the ECB and the family kindly request the media and the public to respect their wish for privacy and refrain from intruding on their private space.”
Kevin Pietersen played a big role in England winning the 2012 Test series in India, which was the last time a visiting side won a Test series here. India have won 16 consecutive home Test series since then.
Reacting to this news on Twitter, Kevin Pietersen expressed his concern for Brook’s family. On the cricket front, the former stylish batsman opined that Harry Brook’s absence is a big hole in England’s side.
Pietersen tweeted: “Crickey, I hope alls ok with Harry Brook and his family, first and foremost!
Secondly, that’s a major blow to England’s chances, because under Baz, Harry is an absolute STAR!”

Brook, who made his Test debut in September 2022, has been a crucial part of the Bazball England team under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. The 24-year-old averages 62 in 12 Tests and has notched up 4 centuries. His strike rate of 91, combined with his average, suggests he has been a key cog in the Bazball approach adopted by the Three Lions.
Who is the replacement of Harry Brook in England’s Test squad?
The ECB has announced spin-bowling all-rounder Dan Lawrence as the replacement of Harry Brook for the Test series in India.
Lawrence is currently in the UAE for the ILT20. However, he will fly to India soon and is expected to arrive by Monday.
