IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah Achieves The Best Bowling Average In Last 100 Years Of Test Cricket

The rise of Jasprit Bumrah in Test cricket can be attested by the stat that has now gone viral which reveals that Bumrah’s bowling average of 20.28 is now the best bowling average in the last 100 years among bowlers who have taken at least 150 Test wickets.

On Day 2 of the ongoing Test match in Visakhapatnam, Jasprit Bumrah blew away the England middle-order and then dismissed a couple of tailenders to finish with brilliant figures of 6/45 – which are even more remarkable when you consider that the pitch was a good one for the batters and there was little assistance for pacers in it.

This was Bumrah’s 10th five-wicket haul in his 34th Test match, and he entered the list of bowlers with over 150 Test wickets. Jasprit Bumrah became the fastest Indian, in terms of balls taken, to reach 150 Test wickets.

Since 1914, no bowler with over 150 Test wickets has a better bowling average than Jasprit Bumrah’s 20.28, which he recorded after his 6-wicket haul against England in Vizag.

Behind Bumrah is Australia’s Alan Davidson, who took 186 wickets at an average of 20.53, followed by the West Indies trio of Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner, and Curtly Ambrose, all three of whom averaged between 20.9 and 21.

Also, overall in Test cricket history, only one player, England’s Sydney Barnes, has a better bowling average than Bumrah. Barnes played between 1901 and 1914, taking 189 wickets at 16.43. Barnes only played in England, Australia, and South Africa.

Talking about the match, Bumrah’s five-for – which included wickets of Joe Root, Ollie Pope, Jonny Bairstow, and Ben Stokes – allowed India to reduce England from 122/2 to 253 all -out. India now have a lead of 171 runs.

At the end of day’s play, Bumrah spoke with Jio Cinema. He said, “You always enjoy when you get rewards. In India reverse swing plays a big role. Born in this country, you know how to use it to your advantage. In India, you have to learn how to bowl reverse. I’ve grown up watching reverse swing set ups, legendary bowlers bowling magical deliveries. To be able to do it now, very happy with that.”
