India vs Australia 2017 Fourth Test: Ravichandran Ashwin sets new world record

India vs Australia 2017, Fourth Test, Dharamshala: India’s ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin broke yet another record, on Day 1 of the ongoing fourth Test match India and Australia at HPCA stadium in Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh).

When Ashwin dismissed Australia’s captain Steve Smith, he became the bowler with most wickets in a Test season. He surpassed Dale Steyn’s tally of 78, which the South African speedster got in 2007-08 season. Smith was Ashwin’s 79th wicket of the season and he is now the holder of world record for most number of wickets is a Test season.

Earlier, during the first Test of the series in Pune, Ravichandran Ashwin broke Kapil Dev’s (63) record of most number of wickets by an Indian in a home season, which Kapil Dev set in 1979/80.

Playing in his 13th match of the home season, Ashwin has 79 wickets at an average of 25.87 and a strike-rate of 55. He has picked up seven five-wicket hauls during the same period.
