CSK vs GT: A really comfortable 7-wicket win for the Gujarat Titans over the Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede assured Hardik Pandya’s team of a top-two spot and they will now play the Qualifier 1, which gives them an extra chance to fail to reach the final.
After MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first, it was the Titans who had the upper hand on the game right from the start. The first four overs saw CSK score not a single boundary and lose the wicket of Devon Conway to Mohammed Shami.
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Moeen Ali got a move on with some fours and sixes taking CSK’s total to 47/1 at the end of the powerplay after which GT bowlers choked the scoring once again with Sai Kishore getting rid of the left-hander.
Gaikwad reached his fifty but took 44 balls to do that. He couldn’t kick-off the rate after that and was dismissed by Rashid Khan for 53 off 49 balls before Alzarri Joseph sent Shivam Dube back in the hut.
Playing his first game of the season, N Jagadeesan was cautious and though clattered three fours and a six in his innings he batted at a low strike rate of 118 for his 39 runs; MS Dhoni’s 7 off 10 didn’t help the scoring rate either as CSK finished at 133. There was not a single boundary scored in the last 5 overs of CSK’s innings and Jagadeesan felt they were 15-20 runs short.
He was proven right as Wriddhiman Saha got Gujarat off to a flier in the powerplay. He was lucky in the first over facing Mukesh Choudhary which yielded three fours off edges. Saha then middled almost everything after that. Choudhary and Simarjeet Singh were smashed disdainfully by Saha while Shubman Gill took care of Santner crisping some neat boundaries as GT finished at 53/0 in the powerplay.
Although Matheesha Pathirana, the debutant, got rid of Gill and Hardik Pandya, Saha and Wade kept the run-rate in check with timely boundaries and good running between the wickets before the opener brought up his half-century. Saha and Miller saw off the chase without any more hiccups.
CSK will take the likes of Pathirana and Jagadeesan as positives from the game in what has been a disappointing season.
Memes galore as Gujarat continued their rally as the table-toppers while CSK are in the fight with Mumbai to finish last.
