The Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals commenced their IPL 2022 campaign on Sunday afternoon against each other, the match getting underway at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.
It was the Capitals, however, who seemed to be the weaker and depleted side with lack of their overseas players. Of their total 7 players in the squad, only two – Tim Seifert and Rovman Powell – were available for the first game and both of them played.
David Warner and Mitchell Marsh will miss the first two games of the Capitals as their contracts with Cricket Australia force them to miss IPL games when the national team is in action; Australia plays Pakistan in white-ball matches till April 5th, only after which Warner and Marsh will be allowed to play in the IPL.
Star pacer Anrich Nortje is injured and missed the game against Mumbai Indians, while South Africa’s Lungi Ngidi and Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman are in quarantine after arriving late as they were with their national teams.
Looking at only two overseas players, and 9 Indians playing in Delhi’s eleven, while Mumbai filled their side with a maximum of 4 overseas and 7 Indians, Ramesh Srivats, who has over 4 million Twitter followers, made a funny and punny tweet saying that the Capitals have more Indians than the Mumbai Indians! Fans had a good chuckle over this tweet.
“Today, Delhi is playing with just 2 overseas players. Which means that Delhi Capitals has more Indians. To tackle Mumbai Indians who have more Capital,” Ramesh Srivats tweeted.

Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan has started off his IPL with a brilliant half-century, continuing from his two fifties at the end of last season. Opening alongside Rohit Sharma, Kishan carried the bat in the entire innings, ending up with 81* off 48 balls, his innings laced with 11 fours and 2 sixes.
Rohit Sharma too started off briskly but was dismissed for 41 off 32 balls. Young debutant Tilak Varma showed impressive signs, scoring 22 runs off 15 balls. Mumbai ended up with a big total of 177/5.
