Senior India pacer Umesh Yadav was on fire in the IPL 2022 season opener against the Chennai Super Kings as returned with brilliant figures of 2/20 that dented CSK early on. KKR restricted the defending champions to a below-par total of 131, which they comfortably chased down with 6 wickets in hand.
Yadav started erratically with a no-ball on the very first ball of the game, but then he was on the money producing a brilliant display of swing and seam bowling. In the first over, he dismissed last season’s Orange Cap winner, Ruturaj Gaikwad, drawing an edge from the opener to a ball that swung away considerably.

Then, in the fifth over of the powerplay, he had the other CSK opener, Devon Conway, chipping straight to KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer at mid-on, mistiming his shot to a back of length delivery after dancing down the track. Umesh Yadav bagged the Man of the Match award – he emotionally remembered at the post-match presentation that it was his first in two years at the IPL.
Umesh Yadav hasn’t had an ideal time in the IPL for the past couple of seasons. He played just two matches in 2020 for RCB – and leaked 83 runs in 7 wicketless overs before being dropped for the entire season – and then in IPL 2021, Yadav didn’t feature in a single game for the Delhi Capitals. Now, he sprung back up with a match-winning performance for his old franchise, KKR, with whom he had been from 2014 to 2017.
Seeing this success of Umesh for KKR in IPL 2022’s first game, after being cast aside by RCB and DC, Matthew Hayden made an unnecessary comment that was disrespectful to RCB and DC.
Soon after Umesh Yadav’s second wicket, Hayden was heard saying in the commentary box, “Someone else’s trash has become KKR’s treasure,” referring to DC and RCB benching Umesh.
This snide from the former Australian opener has been heavily criticised on social media. Fans have been left enraged by Hayden’s remark while some said that the Australian commentator called out the truth.
Here are some of the reactions by netizens to Matthew Hayden’s comment:
Very very harsh thing to say. Has hayden seen Umesh perform with the new ball for RCB?
The others simply failed to use him well. https://t.co/KzXQfeAbrr
