IPL 2022 Play-Offs: Can Mumbai Indians Qualify?

Unnati MadanBy Unnati Madan22/04/2022Updated:08/02/2023No Comments2 Mins Read

One of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League — Mumbai Indians is going through its worst run in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League. Last night, the Rohit Sharma-led side was defeated by Chennai Super Kings by three wickets at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium on Thursday.

This was their seventh consecutive defeat in the ongoing season and with this, the Mumbai Indians created a dubious record in the history of the Indian Premier League as they became the first team to kick off an IPL season with seven straight losses.

A heartbreaking loss on the last ball. 😔

This is also the first time that the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians registered seven defeats on the trot in the IPL. In 2014, they lost back-to-back five defeats, however, they still managed to get to the playoffs. But can Mumbai Indians still qualify for the IPL 2022 playoffs?

Well, seven back-to-back defeats for MI mean that they haven’t tasted victory in the first half of the IPL 2022 league phase and now with seven more games remaining for them, it is almost impossible for them to qualify for the playoffs now.

Devastating for #MI. So near and yet so far. This will be difficult to recover from.

It has to be noted that a team needs a minimum of 14 to 16 points on the points table to qualify for the play-offs. While 16 points guarantee a playoff spot, on the other hand, 14 points bring the NRR (Net Run Rate) into contention.

However, as far as Mumbai Indians are concerned, even if they managed to win the next seven games, they still can’t get 16 points from here on. With this, MI getting qualified with 14 points remains minimal considering the poor NRR of -0.892. Having said that, winning seven back-to-back games is almost impossible, considering the current form of the team.
