IPL 2022: Ravi Shastri Gave An Open Warning To Umran Malik

Sunrisers Hyderabad speed sensation Umran Malik was having a thunderous IPL 2022 and was even in contention for the Purple Cap when he had bagged 15 wickets in 8 matches at an average of just 15, including a maiden IPL five-wicket haul and a four-wicket haul.

However, while his pace has only soared further – Umran Malik even clocked 157 KPH, the second-fastest delivery ever in the IPL – his control over his lines and lengths have gone awry and has had three poor wicketless games – recording figures of 0/48 vs CSK, 0/52 vs DC and 0/25 vs RCB when he bowled just 2 overs.

Following his dismal show vs RCB, former India head coach Ravi Shastri went hard at Umran Malik. Shastri said that Umran has a bright future, and feels could soon play for India as well – however, the former coach asserted that if the seamer doesn’t get his lengths right he is going to be carted around everywhere no matter how much he bowls.

“When someone tells him (Umran Malik) on his face it’s all good to have 156, it’s exciting, it’s brilliant, we all love it, you have a great future, you’re going to play for India very soon. But if you don’t get it right that 156 will go for 256 off the bat. And that is exactly what is happening,” Ravi Shastri told Star Sports.

“The pace is good, but you got to get it in your mind that you have to get it in the right areas. Otherwise, just hold yourself back and use that space sparingly, to surprise the batter. Those kinds of thoughts should go through your mind. If you don’t get it right, you are going to fetch and fetch big time. It goes off the bat at 250 to 300 knots!” he added.
Ravi Shastri pointed out that now the pitches in the IPL 2022 are getting slower after being worn for more than a month. He suggested that on such pitches, Malik needs to target the stumps more and not give the slot deliveries to the batsmen.

“The pitches will slow up as the tournament progresses. We’ve seen seam movement that existed in the first two-three weeks is not there and the pitches are better for batting. So he has got to get it right.
“I’m seeing the media and everywhere it say 156, 154 – it doesn’t matter in this format. You have to get it in the right areas and he hasn’t. If he attacks the stumps he will be far more consistent. 156, 157 – very good, excellent – but channelise it in the right direction,” concluded the commentator.
