It’s raining money in Kochi as the auctions of the world’s richest cricket league — Indian Premier League is currently undergoing and it has already grabbed all the limelight with jaw-dropping deals. All eyes were on the England T20 World Cup-winning duo of Ben Stokes and Sam Curran as they were expected to fetch some big deals at the auctions. And as expected both the players went for some massive amounts.
Punjab Kings literally broke the bank and brought England all-rounder Sam Curran for INR 18.50 crore. He became the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) most expensive ever buy in the players’ auction on Friday. Following an intense bidding war between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings, Sam Curran returned to the Punjab Kings for a staggering sum of 185 million Indian rupees ($2.23 million).
Curran surpassed the record of South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris, who was bought by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 16.25 crore in the 2021 mini-auction. Before joining Chennai Super Kings and lifting the trophy with the yellow-army in 2021, Sam Curran was a part of the Punjab Kings’ squad in 2019.
Though it was a big blow for Chennai Super Kings to let go of their star all-rounder, who recently impressed everyone with his brilliant performance in the T20 World Cup 2022, however, they somehow made up for it by signing another England all-rounder Ben Stokes.
Ben Stokes, who is currently the captain of England in red-ball cricket, was earlier released by last year’s runners-up Rajasthan Royals. Chennai Super Kings acquired the services of the England captain for ₹16.25 crore. So far, Ben Stokes is the second most expensive buy at the ongoing IPL 2023 mini-auction. Both Sam Curran and Ben Stokes both played crucial roles in leading the England cricket team to World Cup 2022 triumph.
