The IPL 2024 auction is set to occur at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai on December 19. Each team will have a budget of Rs. 100 crore, marking an increase from the previous year’s Rs. 95 crore. This will mark the third and final year of the three-year contract for each player, and a mega-auction is anticipated for the following year.
This will mark the first instance of the auction being conducted outside India. Last year, the BCCI had initially intended to host the auction in Istanbul, but ultimately, it took place in Kochi.
Meanwhile, ahead of the IPL 2024 auctions, IPL 2024 auction scheduled for December 19, all ten franchises disclosed their lists of retained cricketers. Following subsequent cash-only trades, Mumbai Indians secured the services of Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans, while allowing Cam Green to join Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Full list of captains for each team ahead of the auction:
Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni continues as the captain and is almost certain to lead Chennai in his 43rd year. If he misses any game, the most probable candidate to lead the team is Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has served as India’s captain or vice-captain in their last three T20I series.
Delhi Capitals: David Warner
A severe accident had sidelined Rishabh Pant during the 2023 IPL. If Pant does not recover in time for the 2024 season – with no current updates – David Warner, their captain from 2023, is highly likely to lead them again.
Gujarat Titans: Shubman Gill
Following the trade of Hardik Pandya, their captain for two seasons, to Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans named Shubman Gill as their new captain.
Kolkata Knight Riders: Shreyas Iyer
Similar to Pant, Shreyas Iyer was absent during the 2023 season, and Nitish Rana led Kolkata in his absence. It remains to be seen who will assume the role this time.
Rajasthan Royals: Sanju Samson
At Rajasthan Royals, Sanju Samson is set to continue leading the team for the foreseeable future, despite not being in the national selectors’ immediate plans.
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Faf du Plessis
Currently, there is no apparent successor to Faf du Plessis. Although RCB may need to identify a successor soon, considering Faf’s age, it might not happen in the upcoming season.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Aiden Markram
Aiden Markram serves as the captain for both Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.
Lucknow Super Giants: KL Rahul
Recovered from the injury that kept him out of the 2023 edition, KL Rahul is set to return as the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants.
Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma
While Rohit Sharma continues to serve as the captain across formats for India, his absence from T20Is since the 2022 T20 World Cup has led to selectors promoting Hardik Pandya as the national vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is. Pandya has taken on the captaincy for India in Rohit’s absence, and it is highly likely that he will succeed Rohit as the captain of Mumbai Indians, although the timeline for this transition still remains undisclosed.
Punjab Kings: Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan is expected to continue leading Punjab. However, there is interest in grooming Sam Curran as a potential long-term captaincy prospect for the team.
