The IPL 2024 season will get underway on March 22 with MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings, the defending champions, hosting Faf du Plessis’ Royal Challengers Bangalore in the season opener at Chepauk in Chennai.
The IPL 2024 season, which will be the 17th edition of the competition, promises high-value and competitive cricket as most of the best T20 players in the world assemble for a two-month extravaganza in India.
However, some of the teams have been dented by injury or unavailability of some players, either for the full season or part of it. So far, it has been confirmed that 8 players will miss the IPL 2024 either partially or fully, and replacements of a few have been named.
IPL 2024: List Of The 8 Injured And Unavailable Players
Matthew Wade
Gujarat’s overseas wicket-keeper, Matthew Wade, will miss GT’s first match of the season on March 25 and could miss the second on March 27 because the Australian has decided to play in the Sheffield Shield final for Tasmania from March 21 to 25.
Mohammed Shami
The leading wicket-taker of IPL 2023 and World Cup 2023, Mohammed Shami, will miss the entire IPL 2024 season due to an ankle/heel injury. Shami played in the World Cup with pain in his ankle. He rehabbed for three months, but ultimately needed to undergo surgery last month. He will be out of action for at last three months, missing the IPL and the T20 World Cup.
Gujarat Titans have not yet named a replacement.
Mark Wood
England and Lucknow Super Giants fast bowler Mark Wood has been pulled out from the IPL 2024 by the ECB to manage his workload with the IPL sandwiched between the Test series and the T20 World Cup.
Lucknow have roped in West Indies’ Shamar Joseph as Wood’s replacement.
Harry Brook
Another England player to miss the IPL 2024 is Harry Brook, who was bought for 4 crore by Delhi Capitals. Brook missed the entire Test series against India to tend to his grandmother who passed away recently. Brook has decided to be with his family in their tough time.
DC have not named Brook’s replacement yet; reports suggest Delhi are looking at Jake Fraser-McGurk as Brook’s replacement.
Prasidh Krishna
Rajasthan Royals pacer Prasidh Krishna will miss his second IPL seasons in a row. He underwent surgery on his quadriceps tendon in February, an injury he’d picked up during the Ranji Trophy. RR are yet to name Krishna’s replacement.
Jason Roy
England and KKR’s Jason Roy has withdrawn from the IPL 2024 for personal reasons. His national teammate Phil Salt has been roped in by KKR as Roy’s replacement for the season. Salt is currently the second-ranked ICC men’s T20I batter.
Gus Atkinson
The ECB has pullede out fast bowler Gus Atkinson, who was bought by KKR in the auction, from this year’s IPL to manage his workload with the T20 World Cup in mind.
Sri Lanka’s Dushmantha Chameera replaces Atkinson in KKR’s squad.
Devon Conway
The only CSK player under an injury cloud is Devon Conway. Conway had surgery for a thumb injury and will miss at least the first half of the season.
