Among the possible replacement players, one is Mohammed Shami’s brother Mohammed Kaif who could be roped in by the Gujarat Titans for the IPL 2024 season.
The Shubman Gill-led franchise was given a massive blow this week when Mohammed Shami was ruled out from the IPL 2024 as the senior India pacer requires surgery on his ankle that hasn’t yet recovered.
Shami has been troubled with an ankle injury on his left leg since the World Cup 2023 a few months ago. He played throughout the World Cup with painkillers and injections and emerged as the highest wicket-taker. But while doing so, he aggravated the injury and has missed cricket since the World Cup final.
Earlier it was believed that he would make his comeback in the IPL 2024, but now not only he will miss the cash-rich league, but also the T20 World Cup. Shami’s return is now expected in October, ahead of the tour of Australia for the Test series.
Who is Mohammed Shami’s Brother Mohammed Kaif? Can Gujarat Titans pick him?
Like Shami, Mohammed Shami’s brother Mohammed Kaif is a 27-year-old pacer who plays domestic cricket for Bengal. Kaif made his List-A debut in 2021 and recently in the Ranji Trophy 2024 season made his first-class debut. He was impressive in the Ranji Trophy this season, picking up 17 wickets in 6 matches at an average of 22 with two four-wicket hauls to his name. He snapped 12 wickets in 9 List-A appearances so far.
Gujarat Titans can pick Mohammed Shami’s brother Mohammed Kaif as Shami’s injury replacement player. Kaif was unsold in the auction where his base price was INR 20 lakhs.
Meanwhile, Shami will be traveling to the UK for his ankle surgery. He has reportedly been sidelined for about 6-8 months.
