As shocking as it may sound, Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy could be under some threat and we could see MS Dhoni leading CSK once again if the team fails to win the upcoming games.
Under Gaikwad, the new CSK captain whom MS Dhoni hand “handed over” the reins of CSK ahead of IPL 2024, CSK lost their last two games after winning the first two matches.
CSK had registered two big wins at the start of the season. The Yellow franchise defeated RCB in the tournament opener by 6 wickets before thrashing Gujarat Titans by 63 runs. Both those wins, though, came at CSK’s home ground – Chepauk in Chennai. And since then, they lost both their away matches – to Delhi Capitals by 20 runs in Vizag and vs SRH by 6 wickets in Hyderabad.
Some of CSK’s weaknesses and concerns were exposed in their two losses. This has put more pressure on Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is leading CSK for the first time.
The issue is that Gaikwad himself is struggling for form at the start of the season. In 4 innings, the CSK captain has managed to score only 88 runs at a poor strike rate of 118 on what have been good batting surfaces. He has not been able to hit the pacers early on, and when once he got set, against GT, scoring 46 runs, he failed to capitalize on his start.
Will MS Dhoni take the captaincy from Ruturaj Gaikwad?

There are murmurs among the fans that should CSK lose their next two matches as well, then MS Dhoni and the CSK management could strip Gaikwad off the captain’s armband and Dhoni may take the reins back. This move, though, wouldn’t be unprecedented as a similar event happened during IPL 2022.
Two seasons ago, MS Dhoni handed the CSK captaincy to Jadeja. However, after CSK managed only two wins in their first 8 games, and with Jadeja also struggling for form, Dhoni took the captaincy back, leaving Jadeja unhappy.
Fans are eager to see whether CSK and MS Dhoni will do the same with Gaikwad if the team loses 2-3 more matches and the opener himself doesn’t find form.
