MS Dhoni, the former Indian skipper is one of the greatest cricketers to have ever played for team India. Despite playing constantly at number 6 position, he has scored 10773 runs in ODIs while averaging more than 50. Recently, former Indian cricketer, Gautam Gambhir expressed that he felt MS Dhoni could have been a different player had he batted at number 3 position. He had said:
“Probably world cricket has missed one thing… that is MS (Dhoni) captained India and did not bat at No. 3. Had MS batted at No. 3, probably world cricket would have seen a completely different player,”
He added:
“Probably he would have got many more runs, broken many records. Forget about records, they are meant to be broken. He would have been the most exciting cricketer in the world had he not captained India and had he batted at No. 3.”
Playing at number 3 position, Dhoni has a stupendous ODI average of 82.75, where he scored 993 runs from 17 matches he played. Last time, MS Dhoni batted at no 3 positions for the last time in the year 2009 against Sri Lanka in Rajkot. From there on, MS Dhoni mostly batted at no 5 and 6 position and became one of the best finishers in the world.
Now another retire from the Indian cricket team, Irfan Pathan opened up about the same and he feels that Virat Kohli has a better technique than MS Dhoni when it comes to batting at number three position. He had said:
“But MS had all the chance to bat at No. 3, he didn’t. Look, I really believe that if you compare Virat and Mahendra Singh Dhoni batting at No. 3, I still feel Virat has a better technique,”
He added:
“There’s nothing that I am taking away from Mahendra Singh Dhoni, obviously he has been an absolute legend of the game. Everyone has their own opinion. I will still take Virat any day,”
