India spearhead pacer Jasprit Bumrah produced a spell of ages to take his Test career’s 10th five-wicket haul in only his 34th Test match in the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam.

With England motoring along nicely – in typical Bazball fashion – at the score of 123/2 in 22 overs in reply to India’s 396, Jasprit Bumrah returned for a spell of serious heat and aggression, and didn’t stop until he ripped apart the England middle-order before claiming Tom Hartley’s wicket to complete his five-wicket haul.

Jasprit Bumrah leaves behind Dev, Ashwin, and Shami to become fastest Indian to 150 Test wickets

With this sensational five-for, Bumrah completed 150 wickets in Test cricket bowling in his 64th Test innings.

In terms of balls taken to take 150 Test wickets, Jasprit Bumrah now is the fastest among Indian bowlers. And he has done it in significantly fewer balls than other Indian bowlers.

Fewest balls taken to 150 Test wickets by Indian bowlers:
6781 Jasprit Bumrah
7661 Umesh Yadav
7755 Mohd Shami
8378 Kapil Dev
8380 R Ashwin

Bumrah’s five-for – which included wickets of Joe Root, Ollie Pope, Jonny Bairstow, and Ben Stokes – allowed India to reduce England from 122/2 to 234/9.

Jasprit Bumrah had made his Test debut in 2018, and he was on the money right from the start. He played a key role in India’s lone Test match wins in South Africa in 2018, England in 2018, and then India’s twin series wins in Australia in 2018/19 and 2020/21.

He snared 32 wickets in 7 Tests in Australia at an average of 21. He has a similar record in South Africa – 38 wickets in 15 innings at 20 – where he was Man of the Series last month.

The 30-year-old has proven himself on the Indian pitches as well, where the pacers don’t get much help. But Bumrah creates wickets for himself. In India, he has scalped 25 wickets in 10 innings at an average of only 13.2!
