As he did in the first innings of the Lord’s Test, young pacer Josh Tongue gave England their first breakthrough in the second innings as well. He once again dismissed Aussie star opener David Warner with a big inswinger, similar to how he did in the first essay.
England were bowled out in the first session for 325 on the morning of Day at Lord’s, in reply to Australia’s total of 416. England needed wickets upfront to wrest back into the game, but Warner and Usman Khawaja put another half-century stand – this is the first instance of an Australian opening pair putting up a twin half-century opening stand in an away Test since 2018 vs Pakistan in the UAE.
David Warner was dismissed for 25 runs by Tongue. While in the first innings, Josh Tongue’s booming inswinger had sneaked through Warner’s bat-pad gap and hit the top of the leg stump, in the second innings, another inswinger rapped on the left-hander’s pads.
Initially, while watching live, one might have thought that perhaps the ball was doing too much and would have slide down the leg side. However, umpire Ahsan Raza was quick to raise his finger. Surprised by the call, Warner reviewed it quickly as well.
On ball-tracking, umpire Ahsan Raza’s decision was out was vindicated as the ball was shown to hit the leg-stump and Warner had to take the long walk back to the dressing room.

Meanwhile, it was the collapse from the England batters that headlined the morning of Day 3 at Lord’s. England lost 6 wickets in the first session today and in all, slipped from 188/1 to 325 all-out. Last evening, it looked like England would take some lead, and by the almost end of first session today, they had conceded a trail of 91 runs and now, not only the Lord’s Test, but the Ashes looks to be moving away from them.
