On a batting-friendly surface at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, which is the home ground of Rajasthan Royals, Punjab amassed 197 runs courtesy of Prabhsimran Singh’s belligerent hitting, 60 off 34 balls, and Shikhar Dhawan’s brilliant anchoring knock of 86 off 56.
The Royals remained the chase alive till the last couple of balls but eventually lost by only 5 runs. Jos Buttler (19 off 11), Sanju Samson (42 off 25), Riyan Parag (20 off 12), Hetmyer (36 off 18), and Dhruv Jurel (32 off 15) played whirlwind knocks. However, Devdutt Padikkal came out with a disappointing knock of 21 runs off 26 balls with just one boundary.
The elegant left-hander was tied down by the PBKS pacers and also struggled to get under the spinners. This ineffective knock by Devdutt Padikkal – which also resulted in the dismissal of Sanju Samson as he tried to force the issue harder – was criticized by the fans.
While trolling from the fans is one thing, when it comes from a Twitter account of a franchise, it was disturbing.
The Lucknow Super Giants Twitter admin posted an insulting tweet regarding Devdutt Padikkal’s knock.
“Padikkal bhai ki jabse opening position gayi hai tabse he unka downfall start hogya hai,” Lucknow based franchise tweet as the 22-year-old youngster was struggling in the middle for boundaries.
This led to fans mocking and slamming the Super Giants Twitter account, which was quick to delete its tweet, but screenshots of the tweet had already been taken and it went viral.
Here is a screenshot of LSG’s insulting, mocking tweet on Devdutt Padikkal:
Devdutt Padikkal had had his success in the IPL with RCB in IPL 2020 and 2021 as an opener. However, after he joined Rajasthan in IPL 2022, he’s mostly batted in the middle order with Buttler and Jaiswal slotted in as the openers.
Sanju Samson, the RR skipper, said that he was sent in the middle-order against PBKS – and not opening when Buttler sustained a finger injury and they sent Ashwin to open – was to counter the PBKS spinners.
“The thinking behind Devdutt Padikkal at No. 4 was we knew that they had a left-arm spinner [Harpreet Brar] and legspinner [Rahul Chahar] who would be bowling in the middle overs. So, it was important for us to have a left-hander,” Samson justified.
Rajasthan Royals, with one win and one loss, are 4th on the points table. They will face DC next in Guwahati.
