Gujarat Titans batsman Matthew Wade was at his humorous best when he took a sly dig at other teams – presumed to be the Royal Challengers Bangalore in this case – following the Titans’ IPL 2022 title win.
Led by skipper Hardik Pandya’s brilliant show with both ball and bat, in the final, they defeated the Rajasthan Royals at the Narendra Modi Stadium to clinch their maiden IPL trophy in their debut season.
After the game was completed – with a solid six by Shubman Gill – all the players were being interviewed by the commentary group.
When they came to Matthew Wade the Australian was quick to troll RCB saying that Gujarat may not have a team song, but they have an IPL trophy – that too in their first attempt. RCB, on the other hand, have 15 failed attempts to date in their hunt for the elusive IPL trophy. Wade’s comments got the commentators beside him in peals of laughter.

Matthew Wade didn’t really set the tournament alight with his bat though – coming on as a reputation of a powerful finisher in the Australian team, in 10 games, Wade, batted in the top-order, and scored only 157 runs at a lowly strike rate of 113 with a best of 35. In the final as well, the left-hander was dismissed for only 8 runs from 10 balls.
This was only Wade’s second IPL season, with his first one being way back in 2011 with Delhi Daredevils.
He was effusive in praise while speaking about the team environment in the Titans’ dressing room.
“Just the team environment, relaxing environment, Hardik, Rashid were leading from the front. It was a family atmosphere, everyone felt welcome, Ashish [Nehra] ensured that. Here everyone gets net time, everyone gets a chance. It has been amazing, hopefully we can come back next year in front of these fans,” Wade said.
“What happens when a Kiwi, and a South African and an Australian walk into a Titans team?”
