A new version of India captain and opener Rohit Sharma has been unleashed in white-ball cricket this year as he has broken his own record of most international sixes in a calendar year.
Rohit’s aggressive, intentful form this year was on showcase in front of the world, and he took it to another level during the World Cup 2023.
Unarguably, he was the best opener in the World Cup 2023, failing in only two matches out of 11 to give Inida rapid starts and push the pressure straight back on the bowling team with his thunderous onslaughts right from the first over of the innings.
Sharma has now hit 80 international sixes in 2023. He broke his own record of 78 sixes from 2019 when he ended as the leading run-scorer in the 2019 World Cup and cracked 5 centuries in the tournament.
In fact, such has been the success and consistency of Rohit in the past 8 years, that he’s topped the list of most sixes each year four times in the last 8 years.
Most sixes in international cricket each year since 2015: Rohit Sharma tops the list 4 times
2015 – AB de Villiers, 63 sixes
2016 – Martin Guptill, 54 sixes
2017 – Rohit Sharma, 65 sixes
2018- Rohit Sharma, 74 sixes
2019 – Rohit Sharma, 78 sixes
2021 – Guptil and Evin Lewis, 46 sixes
2022 – Suryakumar Yadav, 74 sixes
2023 – Rohit Sharma, 80* sixes
Talking about his World Cup campaign, Sharma smashed 597 runs at a strike rate of 125, very ahead of other top-order batters. He notched up 3 fifties and one century.
Meanwhile, there is uncertainty whether Rohit will play and lead India in next year’s T20 World Cup. Cricbuzz has reported that Rohit is not a confirmed captain or even a player for next year’s T20 World Cup.
Cricbuzz stated: “Shah also clarified that no assurance can be given to Rohit Sharma regarding his selection in the Twenty20 side.”
Sharma has not played a single T20I since last year’s T20 World Cup.
