Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir has made another bold prediction for Babar Azam. The 29-year-old is set to begin a new phase in his career after stepping down as Pakistan’s captain in all three formats.
The former number 1 ODI ICC Men’s batsman, Babar had gotten a huge shoutout from Gautam Gambhir ahead of the World Cup. The 2011 Indian World Cup winner had predicted for Babar Azam to have a bumper World Cup tournament in Inida, but Babar managed only 320 runs without a single century.
Gambhir reckons Babar got under huge pressure of captaincy during the World Cup, as Pakistan couldn’t reach the semi-final once again, and their skipper couldn’t perform well with the bat.
“You’ll see the best of Babar Azam now. You will see a completely different Babar Azam. Before the World Cup, I picked Babar as the batter of the tournament. But the pressure of captaincy hampered his form with the bat. It’s because when you are the skipper and your team isn’t performing well, you can imagine how much pressure he was under,” Gambhir said on Sportskeeda.
You will see the actual Babar Azam that no one has seen: Gambhir
Gambhir now has made another massive prediction about Babar, who has resigned as Pakistan’s captain across formats to focus on his batting.
Gambhir reckons Babar will now step up in his batting and could even become the best Pakistani batsman ever!
“You will see the actual Babar Azam that no one has seen. From now until the day he retires, you will see his actual ability. Babar has so much quality that he can go out and become the best batter Pakistan has ever produced. He has got 10 years with no pressure of captaincy,” Gambhir added.
Pakistan’s next international assignment is a 3-Test series Down Under against Australia, starting December 14. After Babar’s resignation, the PCB appointed left-hander Shan Masood as the new Test skipper.
In 5 Test matches in Australia, Babar averages only 27 with 1 century and 1 fifty in 10 innings.
