One bad game – the World Cup 2023 final – doesn’t make Rohit Sharma a bad captain. This is the response from Gautam Gambhir to the critics and doubters of the Indian skipper.
Gambhir pointed out that Sharma led the Indian team brilliantly to 10 straight victories in the World Cup 2023 tournament, before India lost the final to Australia by 6 wickets in Ahmedabad. Gambhir further mentioned that Rohit Sharma has won 5 IPL trophies as a skipper in the IPL; only MS Dhoni is the other captain to win more than one IPL trophy as a skipper.
“In captaincy, Rohit has done a very, very good job. It is not easy to win five IPL trophies. The way India have dominated in the last 50-over World Cup and I said that before the World Cup final as well…I said that irrespective of the result, whatever the result is after the World Cup, India played like a champion side. One bad game doesn’t make Sharma or this side a bad team. Ten games and the way they have dominated the whole tournament. Just because of one bad game if you call Rohit Sharma a bad captain, this is not fair,” Gambhir said on a podcast on ANI.
Should Rohit Sharma captain in next year’s T20 World Cup? Gautam Gambhir answers
Many fans are wondering whether Rohit Sharma should lead India in next year’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies.
Rohit was in scintillating touch during the World Cup 2023 and was unarguably the best opener in the tournament, having taken his aggressive powerplay game to the next level.
Gambhir believes if Rohit can sustain this form and his attacking mindset, then he should captain India in next year’s T20 World Cup.
“If Rohit Sharma is in good form, he should be leading in the T20 World Cup or if he is not in good form, whoever is not in good form should not be picked for the T20 World Cup. Captaincy is a responsibility. First, you get yourself selected as a player and then you’re made captain. A captain should have a permanent position in the playing eleven, and the permanent place depends on the form,” he added.
