Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni broke the internet on Monday, March 4th, evening with a Facebook post about his new “role” in the upcoming IPL 2024 season.
His message led to the fans speculating whether MS Dhoni has decided to open in the IPL 2024 after Devon Conway was ruled out from the first half of the season. On Monday morning, it was confirmed that Conway will miss the first half of the IPL 2024 due to a thumb injury for which he will undergo surgery and will require eight weeks of rest.
On his Facebook, Dhoni posted on Monday evening: “Can’t wait for the new season and the new ‘role’. Stay tuned!”
This message from the former India captain stunned everyone as Dhoni seldom makes social media posts, and very rarely makes such concealing messages.
Although CSK have a few options to open – Moeen Ali, Mitchell Santner, Ajinkya Rahane, Rachin Ravindra, and Daryl Mitchell – it makes sense if MS Dhoni wants to open. Last season, he mostly came out to bat in the last couple of overs. With his age being over 40, he only could utilize some of the finishing abilities that he has – come out and swing for the fences.
As an opener, MS Dhoni could still succeed because he’s excellent in hitting pacers and can do the opening role with even more freedom as there will be only two fielders outside the 30-yard circle in the first six overs which are powerplay.

Chennai Super Kings, the defending champions, will kick start IPL 2024 on March 22 in the opening game of the season, hosting Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli’s RCB at Chepauk. This year’s tournament is seeming very likely to be the last season for Dhoni, who is inching toward his 43rd birthday.
