After winning the toss, Rishabh Pant chose to bat first. The opening pair of David Warner and Prithvi Shaw made a solid start, scoring 62 runs in the powerplay. They built a strong partnership of 93 runs before Warner got out after scoring 43 runs.

Despite efforts from Ajinkya Rahane, Daryl Mitchell, and MS Dhoni, CSK struggled against the disciplined bowling of DC. Pacer Matheesha Pathirana was the most successful bowler for Chennai, claiming three wickets for 31 runs.
