Mumbai’s Sarfaraz Khan finally got to make his much-awaited Test debut recently against England, and he made a huge impact straightaway with his class and audacious stroke-making.

Indian spin legend Anil Kumble handed Sarfaraz Khan his debut Test ahead of the Rajkot Test against England, with Sarfaraz’s father, Naushad Khan, and his wife present at the venue. Naushad Khan, who played professional cricket in Mumbai, but due to financial conditions he couldn’t pursue a big career in cricket.

Naushad moved to Mumbai from UP with his two sons, Sarfaraz and Musheer, and built professional careers for them. At the time Sarfaraz received his maiden India call up, his younger brother, Musheer, was plying his trade in the under-19 World Cup in South Africa, from where he returned as the second-leading scorer in the tournament.

On his debut, Sarfaraz Khan played a brilliantly impressive knock of 62 runs in 66 balls. He started off cautiously against Mark Wood, ducking and defending his bumpers, but once the spinners were on, the 26-year-old took a heavy toll on them. He went after Joe Root first and then Tom Hartley and Rehan Ahmed, hitting them both against and with the turn to race away to a 48-ball fifty, the joint-second-fastest fifty by an Indian on Test debut.

He looked primed for an epic hundred, but his innings was cut short by a run out after Ravindra Jadeja made a wrong call.

Sarfaraz had piled up huge runs in domestic cricket and A cricket. He had an average of 69 before making his India Test debut. He has also been part of the IPL since 2015 and has played for three different teams – Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, and Delhi Capitals.
