Rarely has an opener come to India over the past 11 years and simply confounded the Indian bowling attack as Ben Duckett did in England’s first innings in the Rajkot Test match. The left-hander notched up his third Test century in 88 balls and it was a breeze, cracking 19 fours and a six.
In the first two Tests as well, Ben Duckett had been threatening for a big innings – he got starts in all of his four innings, scoring between 21 and 47 – but couldn’t go past fifty.
In Rajkot, though, as the conditions got the best for batting on Day 2, the southpaw showcased his batting range, class, and audacity and he hammered the famed Indian bowling attack comprising R Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja.
First, he took down Siraj with his cuts and pulls before unleashing the sweeps against Ashwin and Kuldeep. Later on, as he grew into his innings and in his confidence, he collected boundaries off Bumrah, too.
A marvelous innings from Ben Duckett in Rajkot was the summation of what Bazball is: talent meeting audaciousness meeting.
Duckett had made his Test debut in 2016 and played four Test matches in India and Bangladesh before being dropped with little to show. He forayed into white-ball cricket and earned a recall in the Test side in December 2022 under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. He smashed 107 on Day 1 in Rawalpindi that set up England’s 3-0 series win and there has been no looking back since then.
