As the deadline for selecting India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad approaches, former cricketers are weighing in on which players should be included and which should be left out. The discussion mainly revolves around the selection of Virat Kohli due to concerns about his strike rate and intent.
Another player under intense scrutiny is Hardik Pandya, who is currently the only prominent pace-bowling all-rounder in the Indian team. His recent poor form in both batting and bowling during the IPL 2024 has raised questions about his future in the squad.
Irfan Pathan Named His India T20 World Cup 2024 Squad
Meanwhile, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has revealed his 15-member squad for India for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to kickstart in June.
Top-Order: In the top-order batting lineup, Irfan Pathan selected Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Virat Kohli. Any of them could potentially fill the two opening slots, with Shubman Gill, who is among the reserves, also considered as an option. Pathan chose four players for the two opening positions, with both Kohli and Gill capable of batting at the No. 3 spot as well.
Middle-Order: In the middle-order, Pathank picked Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Rinku Singh, and Shivam Dube to fill the roles. Hardik Pandya is the sole pace-bowling all-rounder in Pathan’s squad. While Dube does offer seam bowling, he hasn’t been utilized in that role by Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Interestingly, Sanju Samson didn’t find a place in the team, and Pant was the only wicket-keeper selected. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer were notable omissions from the squad.
Spinners: In the spin department, Ravindra Jadeja is the sole spin-bowling all-rounder in the team, accompanied by Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav as specialist spinners. Notably, Ravi Bishnoi and Varun Chakravarthy were absent from the roster.
Pacers: In the pace bowling unit, Jasprit Bumrah is joined by Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh. While other players like T Natarajan, Mayank Yadav, and Khaleel Ahmed were considered, Irfan Pathan opted for the tried-and-tested combination among pacers.
